Top 6 Self-Care Experiences in South Korea: From Color Analysis, Skin Treatments to Temple Retreats

South Korea is a top destination for self-care activities. From personal color analysis to temple stays, the country offers unique experiences to rejuvenate your mind and body. I explored various services in Busan and Seoul, each providing excellent value and quality. Whether you're looking for beauty treatments or preventive health check-ups, South Korea has something for everyone.

In this blog, I also recommend the establishments where I availed the services including the prices as of June 2024 to help you decide.

Personal Color and Face-Body Type Analysis

In Busan, I found a great and affordable place for personal color and face-body type analysis. Color by Jo or Melrose are the go-to spots that can cater to foreigners. They offer these services at half the price of similar places in Seoul.

There is a lot of hype on personal color analysis at the moment but no one really talks about face-body type analysis. I added this to the personal color and I found it a lot helpful in choosing clothes, hats and even eyeglasses frame that fit me better. I found that more than just the color, the shape or style of the clothes have an impact too.

The analysis helped me understand which colors and style suit my skin tone and body shape best. This knowledge can be applied to clothing, makeup, and even hair color choices.

Korean Perm and Hair Color

After my color analysis, I decided to get a Korean perm and color at Bedope, also in Busan. The stylist used my personal color results to choose a hairstyle and color that complements my look.

Korean perms are popular for their natural-looking waves and volume. The process took about two hours but was worth it. My hair looked much healthier and stylish afterward.

Skincare Treatments

Skin Analysis and Treatment at Individuel Geneve

For skincare treatments, I headed to Seoul's Individuel Geneve clinic. Unlike other clinics that felt like factories, this one offered personalized service. They performed a detailed skin analysis to identify my skin type and issues.

Based on this analysis, they recommended specific treatments tailored to my needs. The staff was knowledgeable and provided helpful advice on maintaining healthy skin.

The skin analysis is already included in the treatment price but they don't allow a skin analysis service only.

2 treatments: 930k won

average price per treatment is 450k won

*Individuel Geneve does not offer tax refund but some clinics like Vands offer tax refund

Following the treatment, Individuel Geneve suggested products available at Olive Young, a popular beauty store in South Korea. Olive Young has an overwhelming variety of skincare products, so having expert recommendations was invaluable.

These products were chosen based on my skin's unique needs identified during the analysis session. Using them as part of a daily routine has made noticeable improvements in my skin texture and appearance.

Individuel Geneve gets booked out months ahead. Don't worry If you were not able to reserve for your trip, there are other highly recommended clinics which you can book in Klook such as Daegu Beaulounge

Comprehensive Medical Check-Up

South Korea is known for its advanced medical facilities and focus on preventive health. One of the best values I found was at Shihwa Medical Center, located about two hours from Seoul's center.

Shihwa Medical Center

Shihwa Medical Center offers comprehensive medical check-ups. These check-ups include a range of tests to assess your overall health. The process is smooth and efficient, taking only a few hours.

The staff at Shihwa are professional and attentive. We had a dedicated staff that went with us throughout the process to translate for us in English. They guide you through each step, explaining what each test involves. This includes blood tests, imaging scans, and physical exams.

One key advantage of getting a check-up here is the cost. Prices are similar to those in Seoul but offer better value for money due to the quality of service provided.

After completing the tests, you receive detailed results along with recommendations for any necessary follow-up actions. The peace of mind that comes with knowing your health status is invaluable.

Comprehensive check up that includes genetic testing: 650k won

*Shihwa Medical doesn't offer tax refund, check other hospitals

Temple Stays: Spiritual Retreats

For a unique self-care experience that goes beyond the physical, consider a templestay in South Korea. Many temples offer these stays where you can join various activities aimed at spiritual rejuvenation. You can check it at eng.templetstay.com. This is also where we booked our stay.

We chose Haeinsa temple in Gayasan National Park. Haeinsa is famous for housing the Tripitaka Koreana, an ancient collection of Buddhist scriptures carved on wooden blocks. They also have an English speaking guide to assist international visitors.

During a templestay at Haeinsa, guests participate in meditation sessions, tea ceremonies, and traditional Buddhist rituals. You don't need to be Buddhist to join; everyone is welcome regardless of their faith or background. These activities help clear your mind and reduce stress.

Remember, this isn't a hotel, so it's important to adhere to temple etiquette, which we were briefed on during our first day. We didn't have to tackle any extensive cleaning since the dedicated volunteers handle that, but we did our part by tidying up the bedsheets and taking out the trash. We were also provided a uniform so you don't have to worry about proper attire in the temple.

Living within the serene environment of a temple allows you to disconnect from daily stresses and reconnect with yourself on a deeper level.

Price per night:

70k won per person for shared rooms

100k won for single bed

170k won for double room

Price may go a bit higher during weekends

*No Tax Refund

Quick Eyeglass Services

If you need new eyeglasses fast, South Korea has you covered. I got my prescription glasses at O-Lens Jongno in Seoul. The whole process took just 10 minutes for standard prescription eyeglasses and half a day for the sunglasses as the lens is thicker and takes more time to prepare.

Many opticians in South Korea offer quick services like this. They have a wide range of frames and lenses to choose from. Even if you have a higher grade prescription, it usually only takes a bit longer.

The staff are efficient and knowledgeable. They help you select the best options based on your needs and budget. Plus, many stores provide free eye exams as part of the service.

I was able to choose the right eyeglass frame for me as this was included in my face and body fit analysis which I discussed in the first part of this blog.

Practical Tips

  • Some establishments offer tax refund so it's good to always bring your passport
  • All of the services above, except the prescription glasses, require a reservation. Some popular ones may be booked out months ahead.
  • Most establishments use Naver for reservations. I was not able to reserve through Naver as it required a local number which I didn't have but I was able to make reservations through their Instagram pages (except Haeinsa which I booked through the templestay website).

In conclusion, South Korea stands out as a top destination for self-care enthusiasts. Whether you're looking to improve your health or simply relax and unwind, you'll find plenty of options here.
